In this story, Elly, juggling a new job, the adolescent traumas of Michael and Elizabeth, and the usual housework woes, finds out she is pregnant. The shock wears off and the family adjusts to the idea of another person in their household. Then, on a stormy night, baby April is born at home, and the Pattersons focus on the new baby girl as they get used to midnight feedings and diaper changes.
